This has got to be one of the most memorable goals in world ladies hockey we’ve seen for a good while. Scored by Lidewij Welten for the Netherlands when they won the Women’s Hockey World League Final hosted in Argentina in December 2013, beating Australila 5-1.
The goal was the final nail in the coffin for Australia, being the 5th goal for the Netherlands.
The FIH wrote a match report for the final and wrote this about that specific goal:
However it was all game over for Australia when Lidewij Welten probably produced the Goal of the tournament when she picked the ball from the halfway line, showing excellent persistence and control and unleashed a fierce shot that deflected off Rachel Lynch (GK) again but all but sealed it for The Netherlands, who were far too strong on the night, crowing themselves the Champions of the World Hockey League.
Watch the superb goal below at around 1 minute 35 seconds. I would recommend watching the whole video though, it’s a fantastic set of highlight of world class hockey at its best.
