A successful night at the glamorous awards held by Women’s Sport Trust #BeAGameChanger Awards was had by the Great British Hockey Team, winning the Sporting Role Model Team award – a high accolade to add to a very efficacious two years after winning gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
Women’s Sport Trust is an initiative that promotes, celebrates and accelerates women’s sport here in the UK and beyond. It is an inspiring enterprise that has been created by passionate sporting patrons from within women’s sport in order to nurture and grow women’s sport to reach it’s potential and beyond.
A statement from the website reads:
The Women’s Sport Trust raises the visibility and increases the impact of women’s sport through the promotion of role models, increasing media coverage and improving funding. We are a leading UK charity focused on using the power of sport to accelerate gender equality.
After the success of the Olympics, Great British hockey has seen a surge in participation from across the UK as a whole, expanding in both the men’s and women’s games across all ages.
To add to the honour of winning the Sporting Role Model Team award, former GB and England captain Kate Richardson-Wash was awarded the Outstanding Contribution award.
On Twitter, Kate stated:
Fellow team mate Georgie Twigg and Maddie Hinch also commented on the awards, although unable to be present themselves:
During her international career Richardson-Walsh racked up 375 international caps culminating in leading GB to Olympic gold in Rio and she was recognised alongside another former international captain, England Cricket’s Charlotte Edwards at the star studded event at the Troxy, London on May 11th, 2017.
The awards ceremony itself is in its third year, and proving the continued support and ever growing development of women’s sport by the fact it was host to an incredible assembly of inspiring athletes from elite international to grass roots athletes, from talented broadcasters and journalists to motivating volunteers that work behind the scenes to continue to advance women’s sport. It also celebrates the diversity and fellowship offered through the unique experiences that sport bring to women across the nation.
