The second test in Madrid sees England lose to Spanish hosts in a gripping end to end match. The blistering middle match in the three game series saw a cascading amount of goals in a thrilling battle between the two.
Giselle Ansley scored her second goal of the series to open up proceedings, half way through the first period, in the 9th minute after being awarded a penalty stroke.
The Spanish goals then flooded in, where Carola Salvatella retaliated nearly instantly. The number 8 scored within a minute of Ainsley’s opener from a penalty corner.
Berta Bonastre then scored the follow up in similar fashion after another penalty corner was given just before the whistle blew to indicate the end of the first quarter, making the score 2-1 to the home team within the first 15 minutes.
The second quarter saw equal play between the sides. Although deep into this period Lucia Jimenez scored Spain’s third goal, this time from open play, to further extend their lead within the 22nd minute. 3-1.
The third quarter mirrored the previous one, with drama and exhilaration flaring across the pitch. With the score at 3-1 to the hosts, England’s Sophie Bray reacted by slotting another into the net from open play, closing the gap to 3-2. To reflect the true nature of this match, within the same minute Spain struck back with Beatriz Perez also scoring from field play, making the score 4-2.
This action packed game led into the final quarter with Spain determined to keep their lead. Spain stormed ahead with another goal from Berta Bonastre from open play, further increasing England’s deficit to 3 goals: 5-2.
The final score ended at 5-2 after a fiery and well fought match between both nations, although Spain had the upper hand today. This brings the series to 1-1 after two matches being played. All to play for now with the last match set up for an explosive performance by both teams.
