Earlier today (Sunday, June 11th), England hosted a gripping match against the Netherlands as part of the Investec Internationals weekender. Yesterday, England faced a dominating Argentinian side, where they were defeated in a grueling 5-1 match against the visiting team.
Today’s event between the top two ranked teams in the world was a dramatic spectacle, as promised. After trailing behind 2-0 during the first half, England managed to bring the score back to a level playing field after scoring twice during the second half of the match.
This led to an absolutely enthralling penalty shoot out, where it went to sudden death, and both keepers making some incredible saves. This addition to the already action packed full time match was full of drama itself, with some daring umpiring decisions piling on even further excitement.
Hannah Martin, a fresh and enthusiastic new addition to the England squad, held her nerve during the penalty shoot out – which will give her even more to celebrate after scoring her debut goal this weekend.
As new captain for the England team, Danson was called up three times during the penalty shoot out, scoring twice and missing a penalty stroke. She also scored her 100th goal this weekend. Although the scores were not in England’s favour, she will be able to take so much back into the dressing room for their continued drive towards the World League Semi-Finals next month.
One of our ‘ones to watch’ players this weekend, Van Male, showed her dexterity when she teased the ball passed Hinch as part of the resilient Dutch force.
